KO2487 Wooden box made by Russian Prisoner of War and given to
Corporal Tom Cottam, number 242142, of the King’s Own in exchange for a
tin of corned beef - First World War. Corporal Tom Cottam was taken POW
towards the end of the First World War, and was repatriated through
Switzerland. The POW camp also included Russians, who received no parcels
from home, and one Russian swapped this wooden box for a tin of corned
beef. Cottam had been listed as missing, presumed killed and until he
returned home his family did not know he was still alive. Gift of Mrs
