1940 Semi-automatic Luger pistol



1940 Semi-automatic Luger pistol, captured at Tobruk during the 2nd Battalion's attack on ‘Butch’ 21-24 November 1941 by Major Sam Waring MC & Bar and passed by him to Corporal Philip Howarth. Major Waring was wounded in the Tobruk sortie and evacuated by sea from Tobruk but died, aged 25, when HMS Chakdina was sunk on 5 December 1941 whilst carrying wounded and enemy prisoners of war to Alexandria.
Major Sam Waring MC is commemorated on the Alamein Memorial.  He was the son of William S O and A D A Blanche Waring of Totland, Isle of Wight.
