Love and War - Sweetheart Items in the Museum's Collection

Sweetheart Postcards - Page One

Commercially produced, the first recorded card was sold in Paris in 1900, these cards with a motif and/or message embroidered in silk and mounted onto a card were sold in regimental canteens and similar outlets all along the Western Front.  Bought in their thousands to send home the true golden period of the silk postcard was the First World War!

Cards fall into a handful of categories the main ones being:-
