My dearest Mother,
After bumping about on the various cataracts and being [ ] and other vicissitudes I am now safe and sound on 13 Nov 1884 to take command of this station. [ ] is to become the starting point of the boats for the Expedition. I shall be superseded later on by some one senior and will revert to be staff officer (whoever he sends

had a long talk with him in the course of the conversation he said he was a very deaf friend of his and added he was on the greatest men he ever met and

A runner is being sent off to Dongola post this minute and so I take the opportunity. I have had a line

I’m as fit as a a fiddle and hop you are all the same.

With reference to your Confidential minute of the 10th instant, I am directed by the Commander in Chief to inform you that His Royal Highness has approved of Major and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel A Hunter, DSO, Royal Lancaster Regiment, being exempted from examination for the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
