Handkerchiefs

 

 
Silk handkerchief, blue, with King's Own Royal Regiment badge and cypher.
"This must be at least 60 years old and was sent to my sister when I enlisted in the King’s Own in 1933. I was then 3710691 Private James Midgley. I joined the 2nd Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment at Lichfield in 1934 and remained with them until 1941 having served in Aldershot and Palestine, until the first action of the War in the Western Desert in October 1940 when I served as a platoon sergeant. I was commissioned into the York and Lancaster Regiment in July 1941 and later transferred to the Royal Engineers in 1949. I retired with the rank of major in 1965 after a total of 32 years service."

Silk handkerchief (yellow) acquired by Private James Parker whilst serving with the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment in Hong Kong in 1955/56. Purchased in a Regimental Shop of NAAFI or local club.

King's Own sweetheart handkerchief of the type bought from the NAAFI at Bowerham Barracks, Lancaster in the 1950s.

King's Own sweetheart handkerchief dating from the 1930s sent home by Lance Sergeant Harold Toole, number 3710070, of the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment.  Lance Sergeant Toole died of wounds on 29th January 1941 at the age of 31 years.  He is buried in Khayat Beach War Cemetery, Israel.
