“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went continually to

most valuable intelligence, and although blown down several times by the
shelling which killed and wounded a number of men, he stayed by them,
tied up their wounds, and carried several of them to aid posts. His
conduct was beyond all praise.”

Second Bar to Military Cross For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to
duty throughout a week’s fighting. He repeatedly carried out
reconnaissances of the front line, returning with valuable information
of our own and the enemy’s dispositions. When the enemy broke the line,
he led a counter-attack with great dash, and largely owing to his
leadership the line was restored. As intelligence officer in action he
was invaluable.”

Major Kenneth Rhodes MC, 1st King’s Own.
KO2126/01
“On the night of 6 Oct 1944, Captain K Rhodes, 1st Battalion, The King’s
Own Royal Regiment, was commanding a company ordered to attack and
capture the village of San Martino [Italy]. Captain Rhodes led his
company by night over a difficult route and joined up with another
company which had gained a foothold in the village the previous night –
this company he took under command. Shortly after the attack began the
leading platoon was held up by enemy Light Machine Gun fire, and Captain
Rhodes himself led the second platoon round the left flank, shouting
orders and encouragement as he went. His determination and confidence
was such that the enemy withdrew, less those who had been killed in the
action. Further opposition was encountered towards the top of the
village, but Captain Rhodes, appreciating the danger of subsequent
counter-attack, pushed forward, leaving the reserve company to deal with
the mopping up whilst he consolidated on the top of the hill on which
the village stood. His handling of the force under his command
throughout the action was of the highest order, and his personal bravery
was a tonic to all ranks.” |

“On 28 Sep 1918, during an attack on the Canal de l’Escaut, he led his
platoon most skilfully through La Folie Wood and thence to a bridgehead
which he was ordered to secure. This he did most gallantly, and by
maintaining his position, enabled the line to hold. Previously at
Anneuse the day before, when the enemy counter-attacked, he handled his

driving the enemy off and restoring the situation.”

“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while in command of a

the raid, and box respirators had to be worn. In spite of this, and the
darkness of the night and the difficult nature of the ground, he led his
party forward and carried out the raid successfully. The success
achieved was largely due to his personal example and to the keenness and
ability with which he trained his men”
