Private Harold Dickinson, 1st Battalion, King's Own, 1939


Grave of Private Harold Dickinson, number 3710696, who was killed by a shark when bathing from Fort Beach on 26th February 1939. Erected by his comrades 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment.
Private Dickinson made his own coffin, he was the battalion joiner and was always required to keep a stock of five coffins available. 
On the day of his death hundreds of soldiers were bathing on the beach at the time.  The beach was place out of bounds from March 1939 and remained so until at the battalion moved to Karachi in September.
