Soldiers of the Regiment

Lieutenant Colonel Harold Lindsay MM

 

Harold Lindsay was born on 17th April 1890. He enlisted into the King’s Own in around 1905/06 with the number 8527. He served in the ranks King’s Own 11 years and 320 days. Warrant Officer 11 years and 33 days. He was commissioned Lieutenant and Quartermaster from 30th September 1927. Served with 1st Battalion at Aldershot, Haifa, Cairo, Wellington and Madras. He transferred to the Regimental Depot in Lancaster from 1939. He was posted to 6th Battalion on its formation 14th February 1940 and proceeded with it to France 3rd April 1940. Evacuated from Dunkirk 1st June 1940. He remained with the battalion and saw no further active service. Captain 30th September 1935 and Major 30th September 1939. MBE 1st January 1944. Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1st July 1944. To retired pay 1st October 1945. Died 19th March 1963

He received the Military Medal during the First World War, which was ‘published’ in the London Gazette on 11 Nov 1916. It is not sure which battalion he was serving with at the time. He is also recorded as being Mentioned In Despatches - ‘published’ in the London Gazette on 30 Nov 1915, 1 Jul 1916 (despatch of 15 Oct 1915) and 22 May 1917. He was also awarded the Meritorious Service Medal London Gazette 18 Jan 1919. Lindsay’s War Service does appear to have been with at least the 1st and 8th Battalions of the King’s Own.

Lieutenant Somerville became Adjutant of the 1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment on 4th March 1921.
