See the photographs: Island of St. Helena and Boer War Prisoners

ko1466/10

Album of Photographs relating to the Island of St. Helena and prisoners of war.  Sergeant Arthur Jones, number 4507, is recorded as having been stationed on St. Helena from 20 Feb 1901 to 3 Nov 1902 - clearly guarding the Prisoners of the South African (Boer) War.  Formed of 96 images held within album pages and eight loose images.
Longwood House, St. Helena was the site of Emperor Napoleon’s Captivity between Oct 1815 and May 1821 when he died.
During the South African ‘Boer War’ 1899-1902 St. Helena was again used as a Prisoner of War Camp.  Between 5000 and 6000 Boer POWs were held on the Island, camped on Deadwood Plain and Broad Bottom.
The first 514 POWs landed at St Helena from the SS Milwaukee on 14 Apr 1900, including General and Mrs Cronje and his military staff.  The General and his wife were accommodated in ‘Kent Cottage’.
Further POWs arrived, 394 on board ‘Lake Erie’ in Apr 1900, 1099 on board ‘Bavarian’ on 1 May 1900, and the last ship was the ‘Mongolian’ which arrived with 649 POWs on 3 Feb 1901.  A total of 4689 men.
More arrived in 1902 with 1050 POWs on board the ‘Orient’ and others on board the ‘Britannia’.
Peace came in Jun 1901 and this was followed with the return of the POWs, the first of which on board the ‘Canada’ on 26 Jun 1901.

“Situated in the country, on the hill at the back of Plantation House.  The church is capable of accommodating about 500 persons, and the style of architecture is the early English.  Since the closing of the Burial grounds in James Town, the churchyard attached to St. Paul’s has become of additional interest, not only to the inhabitants, but also to strangers visiting the island, many of whom have friends or relations interred in this beautiful spot.”
From: Views of St. Helena, Illustrative of its Scenery and Historical Association from Photographs by G W Melliss, Surveyor General of the Island, 1857.

Photograph: Site of Napoleon’s memorial. On May 5th 1821, Napoleon I° passed away on the island of St Helena, where he had been in exile ever since 1815. He was buried close to a spring, in the shadows of a few weeping willows, in the "Geranium valley". His remains rested there until October 15th 1840. In 1840, King Louis-Philippe decided to transfer the body. French sails men, under the Prince de Joinville command, brought back the coffin to France, aboard the "Belle Poule" ship.
