Egerton - Hunter Letter

Undated letter from Field Marshal Sir Charles Comyn Egerton at Artillery Mansions, Victoria Street, London SW1.
“My dear Hunter,
Thank you very much for your kind congratulations on my promotion to the high rank of Field Marshal. It was wholly unexpected by me until I was confidentially informed of it a fortnight ago, but judging from the numerous letters I have received from old friends and comrades it seems to have commanded their approval, and coming from such a high distinguished soldier as yourself. I more especially appreciate your verdict as to its not having been due to any intrigue or political scheming.
Thank you very much indeed for the very kind way in which you have written to me.
Believe me, Yours very truly,
C C Egerton

* Sir Charles Comyn Egerton GCB DSO was born on 10 Nov 1848 and died on 20 Feb 1921. He spent many years of service with the Indian Army. He was made Field Marshal on 16 Mar 1917 which would therefore date this letter to that time. The envelope (KO2686/154) survives and is dated 20 Mar 1917
Accession Number: KO2686/169
