Golden Roll of Honour to Lance Corporal Robert Corless, number 1249, 1st/5th Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, killed in action on 15th August 1916 .  Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Newspaper cutting – ‘Popular Footballer – Lance corporal R Corless, Lancaster, killed. The death in action on the 14 Aug 1915 is reported of another popular forward of the Vale of Lune Rugby Union FC, Lance corporal Robert Corless, 5th King’s Own, one of the cleverest forwards the club has produced. Deceased, along with T Salthouse and Richard Irving, whose deaths in action have been previously recorded, made a great trio. Corless was particularly clever with his feet, and was a master in the art of dribbling. The death is notified by Captain Deed, and confirmed by his brother-in-law Private Richard Richardson, who is serving with the same regiment. Before enlistment deceased was employed at the White Cross Mills. His wife resides at 57 Trafalgar Road, Lancaster and his family have a notable war record.

Newspaper cutting – Another popular forward of the Vale of Lune Rugby Union Football Club has fallen in action. Lance corporal Robert Corless, KORLR. He was one of five soldier sons of Mr W Corless, of Beresford Terrace, Bowerham, Lancaster. Their father of the Lancaster Corporation, also joining at the outbreak of the war. The death of Lance corporal Corless marks the seventh Vale of Lune player or official who has fallen in action.
