Introduction

For various reasons the museum did not publish an annual reports for 2000-01 or 2001-02 so we now present a report covering three years which provides an opportunity to look back as the City Museums Service is about to step forward into a partnership with the Lancashire County Council Museums Service.  What follows is only a brief summary of the many events which took place.

Trustees

In November 2002 Colonel John de Cordova stepped down as Chairman, but is remaining as a Trustees.  Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Warren, who joined the Trustees in November 2001, succeeded him as Chairman.  In November 2002 we welcomed Mrs Sara-Jane Dennis as a Trustee.

Staff

April 2003 will see the departure from the museum service of Dr Andrew White, Head of Museums, after almost twenty years in post.  The new staff structure is yet to resolved, but it is expected that Peter Donnelly will continue as Curator of the King’s Own Royal Regiment Museum.

Key Events

2000-2001

As the year started repairs to the ceiling, which had caused the King’s Own gallery to be closed to the public were completed.

May saw Peter Donnelly attend a memorial service on behalf of the Regiment in Portugal.  Whilst there he also visited Peninsular War battle-sites in Spain and gave a presentation to the British Ex-patriot community on the King’s Own.

Following a visit by the Curator to the 1st Battalion in Bosnia the museum hosted an exhibition on their work as part of the Stabilisation Force.  A second visit to Bosnia, in September, included a battlefield tour to Italy. The tour, attended by 40 people,  comprised a visit to Monte Cassino and a study of the attack of 1st Battalion King’s Own on the village of Montone in July 1944.  To compliment the tour a substantial information pack, covering the campaign in Italy, was produced.

Whilst the battalion was in Bosnia the museum borrowed various items of Regimental Silver for display thus providing a rare opportunity for members of the public to see what is normally only seen by mess members.

In July Peter Donnelly gave a joint presentation with Major Andrew Dennis and Major Danny Parsonage at the launch of the Lancaster Military Heritage Group titled ‘Roman Legionnaire to NATO Peacekeeper’ to a packed audience in the Town Hall.

2001-2002

The major exhibition of the year in the King’s Own Gallery was ‘Dressed to Kill’ a history of British army uniform from 1680 to the present day.  The exhibition was produced by Sara-Jane Dennis and Theresa Boyle, Students at Lancaster University.

With Foot and Mouth Disease affecting so much of the North of England military training was heavily restricted and this gave the Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers an opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the historic military sites of Lancaster, including the Castle, Regimental Chapel, Westfield Village, and Bowerham Barracks.  This event was extremley successful and has since been repeated for other groups.

In the spring the 1st Battalion King’s Own Royal Border Regiment deployed to Cyprus for two years and the museum has been pleased to be able to maintain contact.  A survey of Regimental Silver in the Sergeants Mess was undertaken and  research into the individuals who presented, or are referred to on, the items was carried out.

As part of his on-going work of recording the operations and training activities of the Regiment, Peter visited Arnhem Company’s exercise in Jordan, and the Lancastrian and Cumbrian Volunteers, during their annual camp in the far north west of Scotland.

HRH The Duke of York visited the museum in his capacity as Patron of the Army Museums Ogilby Trust.  He had the opportunity to meet staff, supporters and users of the Regimental Museum.

In January 2002 the Curator was invited to visit Chindit Company Group who were detached from Cyprus to the Falkland Islands.  The visit again provided an excellent  opportunity to record the operations of the Regiment and was generously supported by Media Operations, Army.

2002-2003

The Regimental highlight of the year was the presentation of New Colours to the 1st Battalion in Cyprus, by the Colonel in Chief, HRH Princess Alexandra.

As part of his involvement with the Regimental Association the Curator arranged for a party of approximately 40 to fly out and attend the celebrations.  He also provided exhibition material for the Fete Day and the reunion in the Sergeants Mess.

Armed with his camera he took over 1200 photographs of the event, and has since provided a special commemorative album of photographs to HRH Princess Alexandra.

No new exhibitions have been created with time being prioritised for the production of publications and research at other institutions such as the Public Record Office.  Research has included gallantry awards for the Second World War and medals rolls for the First World War and the list of titles published appears elsewhere in this report.

In January 2003 the Curator was part of a small party which visited Ethiopia in order  to follow the route taken by the King’s Own in 1868 during their expedition to that country to release hostages held by Emperor Theodore.  The visit was fascinating and involved walking for nearly 160 miles through very mountainous terrain.  Over £1600 has been raised in sponsorship.

The range of books and information sheets is continually expanding.   Future research and publication depends very much on the time and resources available at any one time.  The Public Record Office at Kew, is just one of many other institutions who hold a wealth of information on the Regiment - the surface of which has only been explored.

Enquiries

A major growth area in recent years has been the interest in family history, for which military records provide an important source of information, and as a result the impact upon regimental museums has been massive.  Continued expansion of the data held on computer - in catalogues, indexes and lists - allows many enquiries to be answered quickly.

2001-2002                   987 Enquiries

bullet

2002-2003                   952 Enquiries

Research into the 1914 Star and 1914-15 Star Medal Rolls at the Public Record Office has meant that we have a very clear list of the soldiers of the Regiment who served overseas in the first two years of the First World War and further work to research the British War Medal roll will provide, for the first time ever, a list of every soldier of the King’s Own who fought in the First World War.  This valuable work is vital - but will take about 50 days at the Public Record Office.

The Curator is presently investigating access to rolls of men who served with the Regiment from 1920 onwards.  Whilst excellent details exist covering all officers (in both the official Army List and Regimental Lists) sadly details relating to other ranks are proving very difficult to find.
