WAR! 1914

Lancaster and The King's Own go to War.

This major exhibition ran in 2014 and is now finished.

Generously supported by the Sir John Fisher Foundation.


War! 1914 looks at the response to the outbreak of the Great War in Lancaster and by the King's Own Regiment.  Whilst volunteers joined up and began their training, the King's Own was involved in the first actions of the war on the Western Front. 

The smaller exhibition includes:

bulletDetails of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment at the outbreak of the war
bulletDetails of the Territorial Battalions (the 4th and 5th Battalions) in 1914 and their mobilisation.
bulletDetails of the War time Service Battalions in 1914.
bulletWorking model railway based on Didcot where the 5th King's Own went to guard lines of communications.
bulletA moving first hand account of the first actions of the 1st Battalion at Le Cateau on 26th August
bulletPlus much more

Parts of the exhibition remain on display until Christmas 2014.  Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and admission is free.
