China 1857-60 Medals in the museum’s collection

Midshipman Frederick Cooper-Turner, HMS Ferooz, Indian Navy.  KO0099/02  Cooper-Turner served as a midshipman in the Indian Navy 1858-1863.  He was present at the assault at Fort Beyt and with the Naval Brigade in the Okamunder Field Force at the Capture of Dwarka in 1859, and in the China Campaign and Capture of Taku forts, 1860.  HMS Ferooz was a paddle frigate with 10 guns, of the Indian Navy, present at Taku forts.  He was commissioned as an Ensign with the 1st Foot on 8 Aug 1865 and transferred to the King’s Own on 22 Aug 1865, and served in Abyssinia.  He was promoted Lieutenant in 1870, and Captain in 1878.  He was promoted Major in 1883 and transferred to the Northamptonshire Regiment, later becoming Lieutenant Colonel.
