Sergeant J McArdell served continuously with his regiment throughout the
Eastern Campaign. Was always conspicuous for the active, cheerful and
zealous performance of his duties in the trenches during the winter of
1854-1855. Frequently volunteered and went on the trenches night after
night with readiness, when owing to excessive sickness sufficient
non-commissioned officers could not be found for duty. He was never
absent a day from his duty, during the whole campaign from sickness or
