 | Helden der Wüste By Hanns Gert Frhr. Von Esebeck Published by Verlag Die Heimbucherei, Berlin, 1943. Book picked up by Captain Charles Wingrove in Apr 1945 after being
released as a prisoner of war. The factory made engines for the V1 and
V2 rockets. “I picked up this book ‘Helden der Wüste” about 15 Apr 1945
(POW camp was relieved on 12 Apr) in the offices of Bussing-NAG,
Flugmotorenwerke, at Brunswick, Querum. This factory was just down the road from OFLAG79 and manufactured
engines for the V1 and V2 Flying Bombs. “79” was sited immediately
between the factory and an airfield – for both of their protection? However, we did have one 1,000 bomber night raid by the RAF in Sep 1944
which damaged both Factory and Airfield. The Camp collected incendiary
bombs and two big ones, one in camp, five POWs killed, on on German
guards barracks, over 50 Huns killed. CGW 16 Jul 1988. Accession Number: KO2381/09 |
