The gilt eight pointed star surmounted by a crown, with lion and 'IV' in the centre, on black or red velvet ground within a garter, the latter surrounded by a wreath of laurel was introduced in 1878.  Some reports state that the lion was in gold in the 1st Battalion, silver in 2nd Battalion.

The lion and IV was replaced by a silver lion on red velvet ground, with a silver scroll below the garter inscribed 'Royal Lancaster Regiment'.
