The gilt eight pointed star surmounted by a crown, with lion and 'IV'
in the centre, on black or red velvet ground within a garter, the
latter surrounded by a wreath of laurel was introduced in 1878.
Some reports state that the lion was in gold in the 1st Battalion,
silver in 2nd Battalion.

with a silver scroll below the garter inscribed 'Royal Lancaster
Regiment'.

It would appear that around 1904 there was the addition of a silver
scroll above the garter inscribed: 'The King's Own'. This is
confirmed by a sealed pattern of the badge dated 1904.
