On 21 Dec 1944, two neighbouring farmers Jack Pye and George Huddleston went up on to the fell to bring down some sheep. Jack stepped on a live version of a land mine and was badly injured. George ran down to Tarnbrook to bring Jack’s brother, Fred, with a horse and seld to bring Jack down. Meantime, 14 year old brother, Tom, ran the nearly 3 miles to Abbeystead, to inform the mother, Mrs Pye, who was at the school Christmas party with the youngest son, David.
