Jack’s Clog
During the Second World War, soldiers came up to Tarnbrook Fell on
manoeuvres and practice with live ammunition. On 21 Dec 1944, two
neighbouring farmers Jack Pye and George Huddleston went up on to the
fell to bring down some sheep. Jack stepped on a live version of a land
mine and was badly injured. George ran down to Tarnbrook to bring Jack’s
brother, Fred, with a horse and seld to bring Jack down. Meantime, 14
year old brother, Tom, ran the nearly 3 miles to Abbeystead, to inform
the mother, Mrs Pye, who was at the school Christmas party with the
youngest son, David.
