Soldiers of the Regiment

Private Alfred Stockley

Private Alfred Stockley, number 37061, served with the 2nd/5th Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment on the Western Front.  It is clear that he had previously served as number 39811 with 72nd Training Reserve Battalion at Prees Heath, Manchester.  He had enlisted on 10th January 1917 and was discharged due to wounds on 16th January 1919.

Soldiers Bible, dedicated on the inside "Presented to Private A Stockley, 39811, from his Quartermaster, Quartermaster Sergeant Owen, 72nd Training Reserve Battalion, Prees Heath, 13th July 1917.
Accession Number: KO3095/03



New Testament, with written on the inside "Private A Stockley, 37061, VAD Hospital, Gledhow Hall, Leeds, 23 Sep 1918."  Clearly after his wounding in action Private Stockley received treatment in hospital and one assumes was sent to the Volunteer Aid Detachment Hospital in Leeds to recover.
