Soldiers of the Regiment

Lance Corporal W Bowles

Lance Corporal W Bowles served with the 1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment in the 1900s.

Photograph of the damaged White Star ship ‘Suevic’.
The White Star Suevic was launched on 8 Dec 1900 and completed on 9 Mar 1901 with her maiden voyage on 23 Mar 1901. She operated on the UK-Australia route. In 1907 she was wrecked off The Lizard, Cornwall, and whilst all souls were saved, the ship was broken in to two and a new bow was later added, the photograph shows the ship in Southampton awaiting the new bow. After service in the First World War, the ship became the Skytteren, a Norwegian Whaling Factory Ship, which was scuttled by her crew off Sweden in 1942 in order to prevent the ship falling in to Nazi German hands.
