Sergeant Dennis 'Danny' Cross

 

Dennis, or Danny Cross was born on 23rd August 1922 and enlisted into the Welch Regiment as number 3974798. He appears to have reached the rank of Corporal with the Welch Regiment. He enlisted into the King’s Own Royal Regiment on 10th July 1950 and received the new number 22524303. He served in the UK from 10th July 1950 to 30th April 1951. Special Air Service from 1st May 1951 to 2nd July 1953 (FARELF). UK 3rd July 1953 to 12th October 1953. FARELF 13th October 1953 to 29th October 1955. 1st King’s Own, UK, 30th October 1955 to 21st March 1956. East Africa June 1958 to 30th August 1960. Then King’s Own Royal Border Regiment until his discharge in May 1972.

Presentation Shield, 22nd Special Air Service Regiment. With silver plate “Presented to Sergeant Cross by Members of 22 SAS Regiment Sergeants Mess” The silver is hallmarked 1953.
It is suspected that the shield is of much more recent manufacture, with the rear of the wooden shield stamped in ink “House of Heraldry Limited, 11 Stamford Arcade, Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire and Tel 061 330 8664” Which, from the phone number, suggests the plaque is post Dec 1958, and possibly 1970s from the style.
