Needlecraft for occupational therapy

Needlecraft has been used to assist with the recovery of wounded soldiers, more correctly known as "occupational therapy".  The museum's collection includes some examples of the work undertaken by wounded soldiers.

First World War -


Embroidered representation of the Cypher and Cap Badge of the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, made by Private John Herbert Maddox, number 36117, in 1916 whilst recovering from wounds received with the King’s Own. He had previously served with the 2nd/2nd County of London Yeomanry as 21578. His battalion of the King’s Own not stated in records, but he also received Silver War Badge due to early discharge.  He enlisted on 17th November 1915 and was discharged on 11th May 1918.
