Letters of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Bevan, 1804-1811.
Letter Number 5
Addressed to Captain Bevan, 28th Regiment, Launceston
Dated 3 Aug 1804
My dear Bevan,
Tho I am oppressed with Business at this moment, yet I cannot delay one
moment in returning you the most flat Denial to the most wicked and
Scandalous Falsehood that Ever was fabricated. I beseech you to
contradict it & Endeavour if possible to trace the Author of it, who
depend upon it has some Evil Designs in view. These are amongst the many
pitifull & base attempts which our Enemies employ to sow Distrust, & the
mind of Every Individual should be occupied with the counteraction of
them. My fury has made me forget to tell you that it is with regard to
the Shamefull & false Report of the 9th Regiment that I am speaking. In
haste Believe me my dear Bevan
Ever very Sincerely Yours
Edward Paget

CB as his Brigade Major after Alexandria when he was promoted. Paget was
seriously wounded in the shoulder early in the Battle of Alexandria.
Bevan had been seriously wounded by a rolling cannon ball a few days
earlier. Perhaps they recuperated aboard the same ship.
