Soldiers of the Regiment

Lance Corporal John Blaylock Banks

Lance Corporal John Blaylock Banks, number 3800, later 241405, served with the 1st/5th Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. At the end of the war his home address shown as 8 Brunton Road, Lancaster.

Letter dated 21 Jan 1916 (?) on the headed paper of Henry Welch & Co, Wholesale Grocers and Provisions Merchants, Tea Blenders and Coffee Roasters, Candle Makers and Tallow Refiners. 34 North Road, Lancaster. Addressed ‘Dear Field Marshall….’ Sent to Lance corporal John Blaylock Banks.
“Your letter has just arrived and my mother asks me to thank you for it, also to drop you a few lines at the same time. We are all very glad to hear you are well and as happy as it is possible under the circumstances. The relief from the trench business will be very welcome and we will look forward to the time when you will be able to come back safe and sound.
You mention my sister, she is back in England, and is now nursing in a military hospital at Grantham, Lincolnshire, but she hopes to get out to France again sometime. The reason she returned was because the hospital which was a private one, was disbanded for the winter. Marion was quite pleased that you asked about her, she still calls you’Johnny’ she says he has gone to fight wicked Germans!
Everything is just as usual here, except that much progress is being made with the new works. Craggs and Mills both attested and both were rejected. Our youth ‘France’ is of course too young.
I don’t think I ever sent you anything did I? Let me know what is most useful to you. Good Luck and a safe return
Yours, ?
