Soldiers of the Regiment

Drum Major John Hawkins Eliott Newman

John Hawkins Eliott Newman numbers 10271/3701556– enlisted in Jersey on 3rd June 1910, as is recorded as being with the 2nd Battalion, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment as a Boy Soldier in October1912 when he received First Good Conduct Badge. He appears to have been in India with the 2nd Battalion when the war started and went to France on the 15th January 1915 with 2nd Battalion.  He also served with the 11th and 1st Battalions during the war.  He was promoted Sergeant on 6th November 1917.  He returned to the 2nd Battalion after the war on 22nd April 1919.  He was promoted Colour Sergeant on 6th December 1925, returned to Sergeant 30th May 1927.  He was Drum Major from 13th August 1928. His service finished on 12th March 1935.
His children were born at Maymyo, 8th July 1920 and 25th August 1921; Gharial, 24th June 1925 and 6th October 1926; Rawalpindi 10th February 1929 and Lichfield 20th March 1933.
