Soldiers of the Regiment

Private Alfred Hodgson

Lance Corporal Alfred Hodgson, number 22131, is recorded as having enlisted on 18 Feb 1916 and after serving with the 6th Battalion in Mesopotamia he was discharged sick on 20 Sep 1919 and received the War, Victory Medals and Silver War Badge.  He is known to have spent time in India, recovering from sickness, and on return to UK was reported to be only 4 stone in weight.

The journey home, Feb 1918 from Bangalore....
“The Journey Home
We left Bangalore Station Hospital on Sat evening 16 Feb on the mail train for Bombay and reached there ok Monday morning 18 Feb and spent the day & night in Colba Hospital. On Tuesday morning 19 Feb we embarked on the H S Devanha and set sail the same afternoon. Had boat drill on Friday morning 22 Feb. We reached the island of Mauritius on Thursday morning 28 Feb and stayed all day in the ?? harbour setting sail again in the evening. We reached Cape Town on Friday morning 8 Mar about 6 o’clock. We left the strip about 12 o’clock and by train and motor to No 2 Alexandra Hospital Maitland....”
