Soldiers of the Regiment Lance Corporal Charles Gretton Curran Charles Gretton Curran was born in Reading on 19th May 1891. He attested for military service in London in November 1907 and enlisted in to the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He did his basic training at the Regimental Depot at Bowerham Barracks. In January 1908 he was awarded the Third Class Certificate of Education at the Depot. It is know that he served with the 1st Battalion in the King's Own between 1910 and 1912, but at some stage transferred to the 2nd Battalion. On the outbreak of the First World War Lance Corporal Curran was serving with the 2nd Battalion in India. He returned to England and arrived on the Western Front with the rest of the battalion on 15th January 1915. He served through the war and was transferred to Section B Army Reserve on 7th February 1919. Corporal Curran's daughter (Mrs Margaret Rose Hooker) and son-in-law visited the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum in May 1998 researching his military service and in the years that followed attended a number of commemorative services at the King's Own Chapel. Following their deaths a bequest of £159,000 was made to the King's Own Royal Regiment Memorial Chapel in memory of Corporal Curran.
