WO2 (CSM) David Gibb, Number 3708595, 2nd Battalion King’s Own.
Distinguished Conduct Medal, London Gazette 24th February 1942
On 21st November 1941 Company Sergeant Major Gibb was CSM of D Company whose objective was the Butch and Crest locality.
During the attack one platoon of the Company lost its commander, killed, and its platoon sergeant wounded.
CSM Gibb immediately took command and led them with skill and determination, and finally captured a strong enemy post.
During the day CSM Gibb with six remaining men of the platoon held the post in face of strong automatic and mortar fire. With captured automatics he eventually held the enemy down, and covered the evacuation of his Company Commander and crews of damaged tanks.
He then assisted in the ‘mopping up’ of other enemy posts.
Throughout the action his conduct was excellent and he displayed leadership and initiative to a high degree.
