Soldiers of the Regiment

Major George William Bone

Born at Croydon, Surrey, on 18th June 1901 George William Bone served in the Royal Navy from 10th December 1918 to 9th March 1922 (3 years and 90 days).  He then attested for service in the King’s Own Royal Regiment on 8th June 1922 at Whitehall, London, at the age of 20 years and 355 days. He married Grace Gray Elder in Dunfermline on 20th December, 1922.

He was discharged from the service on 16th April 1941 (having served a total of 18 years and 313 days in the ranks) and received a Commission in the Army on 17th April 1941. He received the Long Service and Good Conduct medal in 1938.

From our limited information he was promoted sergeant on 28th May 1927, and then to Colour Sergeant in May 1930 when he was Company Quartermaster Sergeant. He was again promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2, Company Sergeant Major on 26th April 1935. He appears to have been Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant of the 1st Battalion in India in around 1939/40. It is assumed he served most of his time with the 1st Battalion.

George William Bone received an emergency commission in the Indian Army on 17th April 1941 and was Adjutant of the School of Frontier Warfare until 26th July 1943. He was promoted Temporary Captain in June 1942. He was Acting Major at Number 2 Military Air Raid Services from 27th September 1943, later becoming Captain and Temporary Major of the same unit, which he then became Commandant of with the rank of Temporary Lieutenant Colonel.

He was transferred from the Indian Army to a regular commission with the King’s Own, Lieutenant and Quartermaster (retaining the rank of War Substantive Major and Temporary Lieutenant Colonel on 17 June 1945. He was 2nd In Command of the Military Engineering Services Depot at Jullundaur from 1 Dec 1945. He was Captain and Quartermaster at the Officer Cadet Training Unit at Aldershot in 1946.

He rejoined the King’s Own as Captain and Quartermaster of the 2nd Battalion who were part of the Middle East Land Forces. He went with the 2nd Battalion to join the 1st Battalion at Trieste in 1949 when the two battalions were amalgamated into one.

He was at Carlisle and Chester in 1950 and was promoted Major and Quartermaster on 5th February 1950.  He was at Bulford in 1951 and retired on 18th June 1954 and ceased to belong to the Reserve of Officers on 18 Jun 1956. He died on 24 Sep 1958.
