Accession Number: KO1442/12

Letter (in envelope postmarked 4 May 1915) from a friend of CSM Lelliot.
“Bert says he had tried to find the ‘King’s Own’ regiment as he knew Fred Lelliott was in that as they happened to be on the march last Sunday, so Bert asked them if anyone of them knew F Lelliott, and they informed him that he had been recommended on several occasions, and had been promoted to Coy Sergeant Major but on Whit Monday he was shot through the head and killed, they all spoke exceptionally well of him and said he had died an heroic death, having stuck to his post over five hours after being wounded and after all his comrades had been gassed, so he has left a name behind him as an hero. Bert did not know he was married until his chums told him he had only recently been married, I thought you would like to know this as Bert said he knew you and G Stevens and Mr Pague was interested in him.”
