Soldiers of the Regiment

Major Charles Vivian Brian Bird MC

Born 28 Jul 1908. 2nd Lieutenant 1st Battalion from Royal Military College. 29 Aug 1929. Lieutenant 29 Aug 1932. With 1st Battalion, Aldershot, Palestine, Cairo and India. Captain 2nd Battalion 1 Aug 1938. To 5th Battalion 1940/43. MC for Dunkirk. Acting Major 28 Aug 1940. Temporary Major 28 Nov 1940. Relinquished Temporary Major 8 May 1943. Regranted Temporary Major 16 Jul 1943 to 3 Dec 1943 with 6th Battalion. To 1st Battalion 1944. Killed in Action as Temporary Major Italy 28 Feb 1944.

The Military Cross was an immediate award on 27th May 1940 for gallantry and coolness in the retreat through Belgium and France to Dunkirk.  He was later killed in action at Anzio, Italy on 28th February 1944, and has no known grave but is commemorated on the Cassino Memorial.
