Greetings from Caton, Victoria Institute, 19 Jan 1916 letter
Accession Number: KO1716/02

5th King’s Own at Denbigh Station, Aug 1913.
Whilst this photograph is marked ‘Hornby 1910’ and ‘Hornby Station’ on
the rear it is unlikely to be Hornby. The postmark appears to be 5 Aug
1913 and ‘Denbigh’. It is sent from Joe Mashiter to Mr C Mashiter,
Tarnwater, Tunstall, Kirkby Lonsdale, with the message: “This is a nice
place to camp we are having fine weather” surely if it was Hornby the
people in Tunstall would be aware of the weather!

Street, Kirkcaldy.

Police and civilians watch as soldiers watch away from Caton,
Lancashire, railway station. Circa 1901?
Close inspection of the photograph does not reveal any King’s Own cap
badges and one officer has a mourning band on his arm – which could
suggest it is 1901 after the death of Queen Victoria.
Written on rear “Territorials de-training at Caton for Camp on ‘Holme
Banks’”
Caption written on front states: “4 Lancs arriving at Caton 1901”
It could of course be an error and should be 1910.
