1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment at Wellington Barracks, Southern India.


This wall plate is made of Muntz Metal; it looks life brass, yet requires no cleaning.  The Lion and IV are in raised Silver, and the lettering beneath is in Sunk Black.  The Rose is in raised Red Enamel, and the Numbers, Ranks, Names and dates are in Sunk Red.  This Plate was put in the St. George's Garrison Church, Wellington, before the final move of the 1st Battalion to Madras in September 1937.
The Plate was purchased by subscriptions from Serving Officers, NCOs and men of the 1st Battalion.

bullet Private Tom Irlam, number 3710110, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died 10 Feb 1935 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment, whilst stationed at Wellington, Southern India.
bullet Private James Cottam, number 3710934, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died 12 Apr 1936. Buried in Wellington, South India.
bullet Private James Martin, number 3710067, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment.   Died 21 Sep 1936 whilst stationed at Wellington, accidentally drowned.
bullet Private William Francis Waterworth, number 3710381, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. Died 13 Oct 1936.  Buried in  Wellington, South India.
bullet Private William L Robinson, number 3710602, 1st Battalion, King’s Own Royal Regiment. died 9 Nov 1936.  Buried in Wellington, South India.
bullet Lieutenant Colonel  Charles Gerrard Samuels Irvine, 1st Battalion King’s Own Royal Regiment. Found dead in the garden of his home “Flagstaff House”, Main Barracks, Wellington, South India, 2 Mar 1937. Cause of death: gunshot wound in the head. Buried in the Military Cemetery, Wellington. Commanding Officer of the Battalion. Born 11 Dec 1891. Educated: Oundle School, Northamptonshire &  RMC Sandhurst. 2nd Lieutenant  11 Oct 1911 Lieutenant  13 Sep 1914, Captain 10 Oct 1915.  Major 1 Dec 1928 Lieutenant Colonel 8 Nov 1935. Severely wounded & prisoner of war: 26 Aug 1914. A flower stand to his memory was placed In the Regimental Chapel.
