Soldiers of the Regiment

Captain Maunsel Arthur Charles Bampfylde Fenwick

The Late Captain Maunsel Fenwick.  Captain Maunsel Fenwick, who died suddenly of cholera while with the Nile Expedition, was the son of the Rev J E A Fenwick, of Cheltenham, and was born in 1860.  He was educated at Cheltenham, and afterwards served in the Worcestershire Militia before obtaining a commission in the Royal Lancaster Regiment.  In 1888 he was selected for service in the Egyptian Army, and served in the Soudan campaign of 1889.  During the present expedition Captain Fenwick more than once distinguished himself, particularly in the actions near Khor Wintriand at Firkey.
Accession Number: KO0338-01-43a

Captain Fenwick directing fire of picked shots on a house held by Dervish Riflemen.
At one time during the engagement, when a hot fire from a loop-holed house was severely galling the flank of the 10th Soudanese, Captain Fenwick, second in command of that Regiment, mounted some high rocks within point blank range of the Dervish, and from that exposed position directed the fire of selected sharpshooters on the riflemen within the building, while Maxims, well handled by a detachment of Connaught Rangers, raked the level along which reinforcements for the enemy were advancing.
Drawn by J Nash, from a sketch by H H S Pearse.
Accession Number: KO0338-01-43c
