Grave of Captain Edward Bromhead.
"In Memoriam, Edward Bromhead, Captain, 76th Regiment, Eldest son of Sir Edmund de Gonville Bromhead, Baronet, Thurlby Hall, Lincoln.  Died at Thayetmyo, 9th January 1869, aged 37 years.  This Stone erected by his brother officers."
The figure is that of my son-in-law (writes Colonel Bromhead) Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood, Commander-in-Chief in India, who visited the Cemetery at Thayetmyo, in 1929 and had all the graves cleared and cleaned up.

Sir William Birdwood, married Janetta Bromhead, daughter of Sir Benjamin Bromhead.  Birdwood was Commander-in-Chief, India, 1925-1930.  Sir Benjamin Parnell Bromhead, CB, 4th Baronet (1838-1935) succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1870 after the death of his father, although Edward had been first in line.
The youngest son of Sir Edmund de Gonville Bromhead, Gonville Bromhead, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the Defence of Rorke's Drift in January 1879.  Bromhead was portrayed by Michael Caine in the 1964 film, 'Zulu'.
Accession Number: KO0249/01
