Soldiers of the Regiment

Private George Jarrett

Private George Jarrett, number 5428, served with 4th (Militia) Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, in the South African (or Boer War) 1900-1901.  He married in 1901 on his return from the war.

He was a centre forward, or inside left, in early part of the 1900/01 he played one football league game for Stockport County. The date of the game was 13th October 1900 and he scored two goals in the 2-2 draw with Bury Reserves.

He then spent some time with Hooley Hill which was not a Football League club so there is no record of how many games he played for them.

In 1901 (1900/01 or 1901/02 season) he played one football League game for Manchester City.

In the First World War he served in the Canadian Army, and was killed in action with the 2nd Battalion, Eastern Ontario Regiment, Canadian Infantry, on 22nd April 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
