Soldiers of the Regiment

Private Ernie Huddart

Private Ernest Huddart was conscripted into the King's Own Royal Regiment on 15th September 1939 and give the number 3712804 and after training in Lancaster and at Middleton Towers Holiday Camp, Heysham, he travelled out to India to serve with the 1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment, who were then stationed in Karachi.  He lent a number of his photographs to the museum to be copied.  Private Huddart was transferred to Class Z Army Reserve on 18th May 1946.

Militiamen of the King's Own Royal Regiment at Middleton Towers Holiday Camp, Heysham, which had been taken over by the army.  The soldiers are equipped for transfer to the 1st Battalion of the King's Own Royal Regiment, then based in Karachi, India.  The photograph was taken in the winter of 1939/1940.  Newly conscripted and trained militiaman were sent out to India thus releasing experienced soldiers from the 1st Battalion to come back to England to provide experienced personnel for the newly formed battalions.  Note the camouflaged buildings in the background.
