Opened in 1873 for the Lancashire Rifle Volunteers. It was subsequently the Headquarters of the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion, the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, 4th (Territorial Force) Battalion, The King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment and from 1938 the 56th Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Artillery (King’s Own).
