Troopships - HMT Assistance

Photograph of drawing of HMT Assistance in a Terrific Gale on her passage up the English Channel with the 1st Royal Lancaster Regiment on board 11th November, 1891.
In the autumn of 1891 the 1st Battalion was ordered to move from Ireland to Aldershot and on 11th November 1891 embarked on HMT Assistance. On the morning of 12th she encountered a terrific gale in the Channel, a gale remembered as one of the worst which ever swept over these islands, and which caused great damage and loss of life, although greatly delayed the ‘Assistance’ reached Portsmouth in safety.
