The Active Service Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the King's
Own Royal Lancaster Regiment at Bowerham Barracks, Lancaster, prior to
their departure to South Africa in 1900. The Active Service Company
was formed of volunteers who were going to assist the regular forces in
the 'Boer War' of 1899-1902.
