The Active Service Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment at Bowerham Barracks, Lancaster, prior to their departure to South Africa in 1900.  The Active Service Company was formed of volunteers who were going to assist the regular forces in the 'Boer War' of 1899-1902.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Alderman Preston, receiving the Colours of the 3rd (Militia) Battalion of the King’s Own Lancaster Regiment prior to their departure for South Africa, 8th February 1900.  The Colours was kept in the Town Hall, then located in Market Square, and now the museum, until the Battalion returned.  Note the Police and Fire stations where the Lancaster Library now stands.
