Railway Locomotive - King's Own Royal Border
Regiment

The naming of the British Railway's diesel locomotive, 'The King's Own
Royal Border Regiment' at Carlisle Station, on 1st May 1963, by Colonel John
Darlington, Brigade Colonel of The Lancastrian Brigade, formerly of the
King's Own Royal Regiment. On the day of the naming the driver of
the train, G Beattie and the fireman, A Gray, were both former members
of The Border Regiment. On withdrawal of the locomotive by British
Rail one of the name plates was presented to the King's Own Royal Border
Regiment and it is now on display at the Regiment's Museum in Carlise
Castle.

Insignia of the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, as displayed on its
British Rail locomotive, D58. Mounted in wooden frame with engraved with
plaque:
"Presented by T F B Simpson OBE MICE, Works Manager, Locomotive Works,
British Railways Derby, on the occasion of the naming of the Diesel
Locomotive D58, The King’s Own Royal Border Regiment on Wednesday 1 May
1963."
D58 later was re-numbered to 45 043.
Despite the wording on the plaque this item was donated to the King's
Own Museum in February 1965 by Mr Simpson, the works manager, who we
believe had been born in Skerton, Lancaster. One wonders if the
badge was not actually presented and remained in the managers office for
nearly two years before he donated to the museum in his home town?
