The caption, by Mr Ian Thomas, who served with the Anti-Tank Platoon of
Support Company, 1st Battalion, King's Own Royal Regiment in Korea
reads: ‘CSM Brickell and guardians of the ‘Empire Fowey’ in full spate.’
'The Empire Fowey' was the name of the troopship which brought out the
1st Battalion, however in Korea it was the name given to this building,
whose purpose was cooking. In the main, this - and heating - was petrol
driven. Petrol was used for everything including cleaning. The loos, or
bogs, were wooden structures erected over 20 feet deep rectangular
holes. One young soldier came out from the UK and was told to clean the
bogs. He saw that petrol was used for everything and poured a generous
amount in the hole. The next person who came in was smoking a cigarette
which he dropped between his legs.....
