Colonels of the King's Own Royal Regiment

General Sir William Gordon Cameron KCB VD

Ensign 24 May 1844. Lieutenant 1847. Captain 1853. Brevet Major 1857 in Grenadier Guards. Major in King’s Own 23 October 1857. Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1863. Colonel 1868. Left 1877. Colonel of the Regiment 1895 to 1913.
Served in the Crimea and was severely wounded whilst in command of the Voluntary Sharpshooters 1st Division. Commanded the 3rd Regiment of the German Legion from May 1855 to 1856. Served with the King’s Own in Abyssinia, Mentioned in Lord Napier’s Despatches as “having won his admiration by the manner in which he had commanded his excellent Regiment and the Solider like spirit, which, by his teaching and example, he has so well fostered and maintained.”
Subsequently Major General and General. 1893 KCB. Died 25 March 1913 age 86.
Received Crimea Medal, bars ‘Alma’, ‘Sevastopol’, ‘Turkish Medal’, Legion d’Honneur, Medjidie and Abyssinia.
