Colonels of the King's Own Royal Regiment

Lieutenant General William Barrell

Shown on the Blenheim Roll as lieutenant and Captain, 1st Foot Guards, 27 March 1698. 1st Lieutenant of Grenadier Company and Captain 1702. Captain and Lieutenant 1st Food Guards 5 January 1705. Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 1 January 1707. Colonel of the 28th Foot in 1715. Brigadier General 1727. Colonel of the 22nd Foot 25 August 1730. Colonel of the King’s Own 8 August 1734. Major General 1 January 1735. Lieutenant General 2 July 1739. Governor of Pendennis Castle 8 August 1739. Died 9 August 1749.
He is shown in the records of the Society of the Blew and Orange as Captain 27 March 1698 but this is obviously his date in the Guards.
The foregoing is a good example of the unfairness of Officers of the Guards being granted the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on reaching that of Captain, that was in vogue at the time, as it will be seen that he was promoted Brevet Colonel two years later; whereas a Captain in a Regiment of Foot, would only have been eligible for a Brevet Majority.

Lieutenant General William Barrell.
