The Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow handles enquiries about soldiers who were discharged from the Army after 1920.  A fee is charged (about £30) for each search, even if no material is discovered.  A SAR (Service Access Request) form has to be completed prior to the search and returned to Glasgow by post.  It is essential that you quote the Regiment and personal number of the soldier concerned.  There are 40 miles of archive filing (off-site) so do not expect an instant response using the telephone or email.  If the subject of your research is alive, you need his/her permission before submitting the request.

The Veterans UK Helpline may also be of assistance in some cases 0808 1914 2 18 or you may email them at veterans-uk@mod.uk

Only a proportion of our collections are on display at anyone time.  Certain items are on loan for display in other institutions.  An appointment is required to consult any of our collections which are held in store.
