The Great War Centenary 1917 - Exhibition Boomtown - From Front Line to White Lund White Lund and Rievaulx Abbey, North Yorkshire
The preservation of Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire was aided by the end of the Great War. In July 1917 Rievaulx was taken into state guardianship (now English Heritage). Work immediately started to save the ruins from collapse, but the war effort meant that the timber needed to shore up the ruins was in short supply. It was eventually sourced from a munitions factory that had exploded in Morecambe.
