The Great War Centenary - 1917

From Front Line to White Lund

Roll of Honour following the Explosion at Number 13 National Filling Factory

The White Lund Munitions Explosion took place on the evening of the 1st October 1917, the cause was never established, but 10 men were killed, mainly those involved in the fighting of the fire. Whilst the explosion itself was felt as far away as Burnley, shrapnel travelled as far as Quernmore and Scotforth, and windows in both Morecambe and Lancaster were blown in.

Body found 4th October 1917

Firth Dole
Died later in Morecambe Cottage Hospital, 3rd October 1917 Fitter’s Labourer.

Alfred Hays
Male, age 44. Body found, 3rd October 1917 and not initially identified.

John Inglesent
Male, age 38 years, fireman, 11 Roseberry Avenue, Morecambe. Body found, 3rd October 1917

Frederick Leslie
Male, age 38 years, fireman, 21 George Street, Morecambe. Body found, 3rd October 1917

Thomas Henry Peck
Male, age 39 years, fireman, 28 Market Street, Morecambe. Body found, 3rd October 1917

Herbert Peverall
Male, age 25 years. Labourer in Munitions Factory. 1 Rose Street, Morecambe. Body found 5th October 1917

Harry Thomas Taylor
Male, age 26 years, overlooker, 21 George Street, Morecambe. Body found, 3rd October 1917
