141 Days: The Battle of the Somme

The Fighting

The Battle of the Somme was made up of a whole series of actions and engagements. After the war they were named by the official “Battles Nomenclature Committee.”
Soldiers of the King’s Own were involved in all the actions shown in bold below.

The Battle of the Somme, 1st July – 18th November 1916

Battle of Albert, 1916 – 1st – 13th July
1st Battalion at Serre/Beaumont Hamel
7th Battalion at La Boisselle

Battle of Bazentin Ridge – 14th – 17th July
Battle of Delville Wood – 15th July – 3rd September
8th Battalion – Delville Wood, Talus Boise and Guillemont.
1st/4th and 1st/5th Battalions at Guillemont and Trones Wood

Battle of Pozieres Ridge – 23rd July – 3rd September
7th Battalion at Bazentin-le-Petit
Battle of Guillemont – 3rd – 6th September
Battle of Ginchy – 9th September
Battle of Flers-Courcelette – 15th – 22nd September
Battle of Morval – 25th – 28th September
1st/4th and 1st/5th Battalion at Flers and Mametz
Battle of Thiepval Ridge – 26th – 28th September
Battle of The Transloy Ridges – 1st – 18th October
Battle of The Ancre Ridges – 1st October – 11th November
1st Battalion at Spectrum Trench
Battle of The Ancre – 13th – 18th November
8th Battalion – Serre and Capture of Beaumont Hamel


Battalions also took part in non-fighting activities, outside the major actions, such as providing men for working and carrying parties.
